Case Study - Sustainable Garden Design with Green Rooms and Alpine

Green Rooms Gardens & Landscapes has a strong focus on organic and sustainable garden design and Alpine is proud to be key a supplier of plants for their projects.

Green Rooms incorporates, wherever possible, sustainable yet practical design alternatives to meet their clients’ briefs.  

This includes:

•    using locally sourced stone and other materials for hardscapes as often as possible to reduce the transport of materials and hence carbon dioxide emissions;

•    using sustainably harvested Australian cypress rather than imported rainforest timber;

•    only using organic potting mixes, fertilizers and pest sprays; and

•    including water tanks and grey water systems where the budget and site allow.

A recent example of a project involving Green Rooms and Alpine is the Waverley Community Garden at Bondi Junction.  The old community garden had become overgrown and was in need of a redesign.  Green Rooms created 28 individual garden beds for growing a range of vegetable and fruit trees surround by Alpine grown stock such as Lillipillies to produce bush tucker.

The design also included a pond to attract frogs and birds to the garden to help manage pests and special raised garden beds for children where they can experiment with growing their own food and most importantly have fun.

The soil for the garden beds was enriched with recycled organic green waste and recycled council green waste (mainly woodchips) are used on paths and other areas around the garden beds.

The brief also included educational sessions for the community focusing on sustainable gardening and how to get the most out of the new design.

Green Rooms sees growing interest in this area of design but the biggest hurdle is educating clients about the alternatives available.

Green Rooms also features a range of native and exotic landscape plants in their designs such as Lomandra, Viburnum and Syzygium sourced from Alpine.
