Tristaniopsis laurina
Water Gum/ Kanuka Box

Medium sized, evergreen tree with a dense canopy of oblong shaped green leaves.  Produces a mass of fragrant yellow flowers in Summer.  Smooth, pale bark shedding in strips.  Leaves can turn red in cooler climates.  Use as a street tree, specimen tree, shade tree and wind break.

Occurs in coastal forests, rainforests, and along riverbanks and streams of Eastern Australia.

Dimensions:     

Parkland/ Large Open Space:  Up to 15m h x 10m w

Moderate Open Space: 8m h x 5m w

Urban Environment: Usually to about 8m h x 5m w in cultivation

Aspect:

Full sun to semi shade.

Coastal Tolerance:                

Good choice for coastal plantings.

Soil Requirements:

  • Prefers moist well drained soil rich in organic matter.
  • Tolerant to compacted, wet soils
  • Tolerant to saline soils

Moisture Requirements:

Requires consistent moisture levels in soil.  Regular supplementary watering in Summer is beneficial.  Mulching will help retain soil moisture.

Temperature Range:

Perform best in warmer climates.  Tolerant of medium frosts.

Maintenance and Fertiliser Requirements:

Prune regularly to desired shape.  Fertilise with slow release fertiliser in Spring.

Pests and Diseases:

Susceptible to attack from free- living psyllid (Not pimple forming psyllid) and scale insects. Treatment not usually required.
