Comments, Features & Uses:

A large, upright and evergreen shrub. Dense and very bushy so ideal for hedging, screening and topiaries. Smaller leaves than the straight species but still exhibits the usual fluffy white flowers in summer which develop into edible deep mauve or white berries.

Full sun to semi shade.

Coastal Tolerance:                

Second line where protected.

Soil Requirements:

  • Prefers fertile well drained soil rich in organic matter.
  • Will grow in sandy soils where organic matter and slow release fertiliser has been added.
  • Avoid heavy clay or poorly drained positions.

Moisture Requirements:

Requires consistent moisture levels in soil or regular supplementary watering. Wilting and leaf drop is common if plant dries out.

Temperature Range:

A wide range of temperatures and aspects are tolerated including colder conditions and light frosts. Also suitable for protected seaside gardens.

Maintenance and Fertiliser Requirements:

Moderate: Regular pruning every 4 -6 weeks to maintain as dense hedge/screen. Fertilise with slow release fertiliser in late Winter and early Autumn.

Pests and Diseases:

Psyllid resistant but prone to infestation of scale and sooty mould where planted in heavy shade.

Spacing Guide:

750mm centres for dense formal hedge, 1200mm for large screen..
