Opening Doors: Alpine Nurseries Welcomes TAFE Landscape Design Students

May 7, 2025

At Alpine Nurseries, our dedication to fostering the next generation of landscape professionals goes beyond the delivery of premium quality plants—we invest in people, education, and industry growth. One of the standout examples of this commitment is our ongoing engagement with students from Ryde TAFE studying Landscape Design.

An Educational Partnership with Purpose

Led by one of many Alpine Horticulturalists Ron Schuurman, these visits are part of a broader module on Production Nurseries. For many students, their visit to Alpine Nurseries marks their first experience inside a large-scale wholesale production nursery. It’s an eye-opening opportunity to witness the practical side of horticulture—transforming theoretical knowledge into tangible insight.

Behind the Green Curtain: A Deep Dive into Nursery Operations

During their visit, students are introduced to the lifecycle of plant production—from the creation of production programs and sourcing tube stock to potting processes and the long-term care of advanced trees. These sessions highlight the extensive planning and detail that underpin every plant’s journey from tube stock to semi-mature specimen, often over several years.

We also shine a spotlight on our integrated pest management strategy, including our innovative “bugs for bugs” program. This environmentally responsible approach has significantly reduced our reliance on chemical sprays while maintaining plant health and quality.

Hands-On Learning: What Makes a Quality Plant

Our sessions delve into quality assessment, teaching students how to identify a top-grade plant using diverse species and practical demonstrations. We explore the Australian Standards AS2303 for tree growth, discussing its importance and how Alpine ensures compliance through consistent, high-quality practices and accredited processes.

Empowering the Future Landscape Industry

In addition to production insights, students learn about how Alpine supports industry professionals—from business registration to flexible purchasing options through our Trademart, online systems, and direct delivery services. They also gain perspective on Alpine’s scale and capabilities, including our access to a vast network of specialist growers across Australia.

Positive Impact and Industry Growth

Feedback from educators and students alike has been overwhelmingly positive. Not only do these visits provide valuable learning, but they also foster new industry connections.

At Alpine Nurseries, we believe that meaningful industry engagement begins with education. By opening our gates to students, we’re nurturing not just plants—but the future leaders of Australia’s landscape industry.
