Pennisetum advena 'Rubrum'
Purple Fountain Grass
Description
This is a beautiful, quick growing, clumping, exotic grass ideal for screening and feature planting. The long, narrow, upright to arching foliage is dark burgundy-red to bronze in colour from Spring through to Autumn, turning a rustic straw colour in Winter. Impressive burgundy to cream foxtail-like flowers are displayed above the foliage from mid Spring to Autumn. Best foliage colour is seen in full sun but the plant will accept partly shaded sites. Grows in moist, fertile loams to clay loams preferring good drainage but tolerating poor drainage. Withstands heat, humidity, wind, drought and light frost. Rubrum is suitable for large tubs, mass plantings and colour contrast in the garden/landscape, as well as erosion control. In early Spring trim back to 200mm/400mm above ground to remove the previous season's spent foliage/flower stalks. Apply a controlled release fertiliser and water well.
