Teucrium fruticans
Tree Germander, Shrubby Germander
Description
This is a spreading evergreen shrub from the mint family with aromatic blue-grey/green foliage and pretty, mauve-blue flowers on arching, square, grey stems that are covered in dense hairs. Hot overhead sun is preferred and the plant will tolerate a wide range of soils, even poor soils. Water regularly to establish, but ensure good drainage as the plant dislikes wet feet. Drought tolerant once established. Tolerates light frosts as well as inland heat and is also well-suited to coastal conditions. Prune lightly immediately after flowering to stimulate lateral branching and to keep compact. May develop fungal problems if grown in a constantly damp situation.
