Alpine Nurseries Diverts Over 25 Tonnes of Plastic Pots from Landfill in Industry-Leading Recycling Initiative

Thanks to our industry leading environmental program, Alpine Nurseries has successfully recovered and recycled over 25 tonnes of used plastic plant pots in the past 12 months. This milestone marks a major achievement for the nursery industry and reinforces Alpine’s commitment to sustainable business practices.

This initiative is part of a best-practice environmental partnership with Garden City Plastics and the PP5 Recycling Program. The PP5 program is designed to tackle one of the nursery industry’s most pressing environmental challenges – the disposal of polypropylene plastic pots – by providing an efficient, closed-loop recycling system.

“Our industry is built on cultivating green life, and we believe it’s our responsibility to operate in a way that supports the health of our environment,” said Dan Ewings, General Manager of Alpine Nurseries. 

“Diverting this volume of plastic from landfill not only reduces our environmental impact it also helps us to all set a new benchmark for the nursery sector in Australia.”

How Trade Customers Can Get Involved:

Alpine Nurseries welcomes all trade customers to participate in this impactful recycling initiative. Here’s how:

  • Return: Drop off your used, clean PP5 plastic pots at Alpine Nurseries Dural or Alstonville sites.
  • Recycle: Pots are then collected and processed through the PP5 program in collaboration with Garden City Plastics.
  • Close the Loop: The recycled plastic is repurposed into new pots, ready to re-enter the supply chain.

Alpine encourages landscape professionals, councils, developers, and garden retailers to integrate this recycling practice into their daily operations.

Did you know?

In Australia, plastic plant pots and labels are typically produced from PP5 plastic, a material that can be recycled over and over again.
