Alpine’s Viburnum Odoratissimum

Nov 20, 2021

Viburnum odoratissimum, commonly called ‘Sweet Viburnum’ is a fast-growing evergreen shrub.
It is a fantastic choice, and as many of you might know, is commonly used by landscapers for hedging and screening. With its fast growth and large leaves, a substantial screen or hedge will be ready in no time.

Viburnum has lovely emerald, green leaves. During warmer months a deep mahogany colour gives the edge of the leaves a wonderful silhouette, creating a perfect contrast with the bright white clusters of flowers that populate the bush in Spring and Summer. These flowers are followed by red berries, they turn black when ripe, and are a wonderful attraction for birds and wildlife.

Viburnum odoratissimum sideThe Viburnum is an adaptable plant and can grow in both full sun and part shade, it prefers a well-drained soil and can tolerate tough coastal salt spray. It grows to a height of approx. 3-5 metres high and between 1-2 metres in width, with regular annual prune it can create a lush thick hedge or screen. The viburnum needs regular watering especially during Summer and will flourish with regular feeding.

A staple within our industry, Alpine Nurseries grow these in-house and have them available in a number of sizes ranging from 200mm up to 500mm.
