Dietes grandiflora

Large Wild Iris, Fairy Iris,

Description

A vigorous, grassy, clumping perennial with long, rigid, sword-like green leaves that grow in fan-like rosettes. The iris-like blooms are white, marked with yellow and purple and are borne in abundance during Spring and Summer, sitting above the foliage on wiry stems. Do not remove flower stems as they continue to flower for many years. Plant as a massed display in large commercial gardens or as a specimen in Cottage style gardens. Performs best in a well-drained soil, rich in organic matter but is also tolerant of reasonably tough conditions. Drought and frost hardy. Fertilise occasionally and water during dry spells. Cut back and allow to re-shoot if looking untidy and neglected.
