Doryanthes excelsa
Gymea Lily
Description
A dramatic accent plant with a loose rosette of large, stiff, bright green sword-shaped leaves which act as a base to a stunning head of red flowers borne on a tall stem. Ideal choice for mass planting in large scale environments such as parks etc, or, as a single feature in native gardens. Prefers a light textured soil which drains freely. Temperature range includes subtropical to warm temperate to Mediterranean and the species will tolerate coastal situations providing there is protection from salt winds. Maintain moisture during the growing season and remove spent flower heads and fertilise with a slow release native fertiliser in Spring.
