Doryanthes palmeri
Spear Lily
Description
A dramatic accent plant with a loose rosette of large arching, sword-shaped leaves which act as a base to a stunning arrangement of red/reddish-orange flowers which are displayed in a toothbrush fashion along the top section of a tall, arching stalk, 4-6m long. Impressive as a feature plant in large gardens or displayed in groupings in parks etc. Prefers a light textured soil with free drainage. Temperature range is from sub tropical to warm temperate to Mediterranean and the species will tolerate coastal situations provided there is protection from salt-laden winds. Maintain moisture during the growing season. Remove spent flower heads and fertilise with a slow release native fertiliser in Spring.
