Ficus macrophylla
Moreton Bay Fig
Description
A medium to large spreading tree with leathery, glossy, dark green leaves, 10-23cm long with a blunt point and a rusty underside. The trunk can become massive with thick, prominent buttressing and grey-brown bark. Adaptable to a wide range of soils and appreciates adequate moisture. A suitable coastal tree, tolerating salt-laden winds, and an excellent shade tree for parks and larger properties as well as avenue plantings. The extensive and vigorous root system makes it unsuitable for suburban gardens however, as it needs plenty of room to spread.
