Metrosideros thomasii
New Zealand Christmas Bush
Description
A hardy, large shrub to small tree, developing from a dense bun shape when young to a domed tree with a conical crown as it matures. Leaves are grey-green in colour and velvety to touch. Flowers consist of a mass of brilliant crimson red stamens during Spring and Summer and sporadically throughout the year.
Likes full sun and is adaptable to most soils. Appreciates regular watering when young but dislikes wet feet, and withstands drought periods once established.
Highly tolerant of coastal positions and exposure to salt-laden winds.
To train as a tree, prune when young to maintain a single trunk, otherwise leave to develop naturally as a multi-branched shrub or trim as a hedge. Bird attracting.
