Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Nafray'
Nafray, Foxtail
Description
A non-invasive, mid-sized, compact, tussock grass with fine green foliage. From Summer through to Autumn cream to purple tinged foxtail-like, feathery flowers are displayed en masse within and above the foliage. Grows in full sun to 50% shade and is best suited to protected coastal positions. Will also grow inland but requires protection from hot, drying, westerly winds and may burn off with frost, but will re-shoot in Spring. Prefers loam, clay loam and light clay soils and will grow in moist to wet soils so ensure good water during hot, dry Summers. Mulch well. Nafray is an ideal plant for specimen or mass plantings in residential or commercial gardens, or for erosion control and swathe plantings on roadsides or in parks. Reduce to a 1/3 size in late Winter/early Spring to remove old foliage and spent flowers, fertilise with a controlled release fertiliser, and water well to encourage regrowth.
