London Plane Tree
A large, robust, deciduous tree with a sturdy trunk. Canopy is pyramidal when young, becoming open, rounded and spreading with maturity. Leaves are Maple-like, 3-5 lobed, light grey-green and have a downy underside. Autumn colour is brownish-yellow to yellowish-green. Insignificant flowers appear during Spring, followed by brown, furry/prickly, ball-like fruits. Grows well in full sun to partial shade, adaptable to a wide variety of soils but preferring moist sites. Endures compaction and restricted root space and is considered quite tolerant of urban environments and pollution. Good for shade, specimen and avenue plantings in parks and streetscapes.
