Strelitzia reginae
Bird of Paradise, Strelitzia, Crane Flower
Description
This is the best known and most popular Strelitzia in cultivation. It has the usual dense, clumping habit, with upright leaf stems that support deep green, to grey-green, broad, tropical looking leaves. It also displays the recognisable, striking, orange and blue bird-like flowers that sit amongst the foliage. Grows best in a sunny position but will tolerate part shade, preferring a moist, enriched, well drained soil. Can cope with very little or a lot of water provided it can drain away freely. Dislikes wet feet and the fleshy roots will rot in boggy soil. Withstands drought, coastal conditions, light frost and general neglect. This is a very hardy plant, good for low maintenance and Tropical gardens, pots, plus Xeriscapes. Prune back old or damaged foliage to keep tidy and remove dead flower heads to encourage a new flush. Fertilise in Spring and Summer with a general purpose fertiliser.
